BayesiaLab adopted by the medical research

October, 10 2006 / press release

The French software publisher, Bayesia, world leader in Bayesian Networks for data mining, is internationalizing, especially in medical research. Laboratory and research organizations are more and more interested in its software package BayesiaLab. The American Diabetes Association is equipped, since last July, with the licence of BayesiaLab. In Europe, it’s in the field of the medical laboratories that BayesiaLab makes new followers: the famous establishments Lilly (in Belgium) and GlaxoSmithKline (in England) just got equipped with the Bayesia«s data mining software. In Germany, the prestigious polytechnic higher school of Rhénanie-Westphalie, the Rheinische-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) did exactly the same thing. Our American interlocutor bets on a development of BayesiaLab in United States in the medium term.

The field of the medical research adopts BayesiaLab

Since July 2006, the team of researchers of the American Diabetes Association (ADA*) chose the software BayesiaLab to conclude its work of fight against the diabetes. « The Bayesian approach for the data mining is a subject of research extremely promising. I worked a lot on it. I had the opportunity to test many data mining tools and I have to admit that the one of Bayesia is the more succeeded of all those which I could test. » explain Kémal Cakici, academic and researcher, in particular for the ADA. « What makes BayesiaLab so attractive for me personally is the fact that, Lionel Jouffe’s company (General Director and cofounder of Bayesia, and person in charge for the BayesiaLab software) was able to put a very intuitive and user friendly interface in front of quite complicated and hard to grasp Bayesian and decision modeling theory. I have witnessed significant improvements in the BayesiaLab in each version and Lionel and his company has been very receptive and helpful with respect to listening and incorporating features into their software. » Convinced of the potential of BayesiaLab, this researcher, helped by his director of researches, the Dr. R. Soyer, professor at the University of George Washington, himself a very strong proponent of Bayesian modeling, managed to convince the American Diabetes Association to get equipped with the French software.

A potential with export

Always in the medical field, the polytechnic higher school of Rhénanie-Westphalie, the Rheinische-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) just got BayesiaLab.

In Belgium, it’s the laboratory Lilly which got equipped with the software of Bayesia. Three days were enough for the team of Bayesia to start and form these new users.

In England, the famous laboratory GSK (GlaxoSmithKline), whose researchers already used BayesiaLab, just got a new licence of the analysis software of data mining of Bayesia. « BayesiaLab's key advantage is high quality visualisation » explain Richard Mott, user of BayesiaLab at GlaxoSmithKline Discovery IT Business Systems Delivery. « BayesiaLab has a lot of potential as a tool for quantitative evaluation of complex data. This software is particularly adapted to our needs, especially concerning the analysis of complex problems of decisions making. »

« BayesiaLab could know a significant success in United States »

In fact, on an international scale, more and more researchers in medicine discover and adopt the Bayesian Networks, and in particular the software BayesiaLab. « I feel like BayesiaLab has a very easy to use and understandable interface at the end user level. Finding possible models from data with the ability to include expert knowledge is very powerful feature of BayesiaLab. » continues Kémal Cakici. « Bayesian methods, and Bayesian software have just started being recognized by larger crowds, especially with lots of efforts going in to Spam filtering. Bayesian modeling starts to reach the research communities. With proper exposure and few case studies (including academic publications), the use of BayesiaLab in the States can increase significantly and they can successfully grab a significant portion of the market. » conclude the American researcher.

End of November 2006, the software BayesiaLab will be presented to « NII » by Knowledge Synergy Inc., the Japanese partner of Bayesia

* American Diabetes Association (ADA) : it’s the principal national organization, with no lucrative goal, dedicated to the health, the research, and the diffusion of information on the diabetes. Created in 1940, the ADA organizes programs in each of the 50 states of America, and in Colombia. The actions reach hundreds of communities.
