Monitor Content: Random Node

Monitor Content: Random Node

Inside the Monitor of a random node, there are two sections that provide information about the corresponding node:

Monitor — Top Section

The top section always features the Node Name and the Value. For continuous nodes or discrete nodes with numerical states, the Monitor also shows Mean and Standard Deviation.

MonitorContentTop

In the examples of Monitors shown here, the Mean and Value coincide. However, that is not always the case. We discuss the important distinction in section Mean, Value, and Standard Deviation.

Monitor — Central Section The central section of a Monitor is the visual representation

of the distribution of the corresponding node.

MonitorContentBottom

The horizontal bars inside a Monitor are proportional to the probabilities of each state of the corresponding node.

MonitorProbabilityBars

A Monitor always shows the current probability distribution of its corresponding node: - If no evidence is set on any nodes in the network, a Monitor shows the marginal distribution of the corresponding node. - If any evidence is set on a node in the network, a Monitor shows the posterior distribution of the corresponding node.

The numerical values of these probabilities are shown as percentages, or in Scientific Notation if the option is chosen in the Contextual Menu of the Monitor Panel.

MonitorProbabilityPercentages

The percentages are rounded to the nearest one-hundredth of one percent. For instance, a probability of 10.1947% would be rounded to 10.19%.

However, if a displayed value, e.g., 9.57%, happens to coincide with the precise underlying probability, i.e., 9.57000000%, the displayed value of 9.57% would be highlighted in bold.

MonitorProbabilityPercentageExact

To the right of the probability bars, the Monitors can show the intervals of each state or the State Names.

Additional Information in Monitors Depending on the context, Monitors can

provide several additional pieces of information. #### Color Matching If colors are applied to the nodes, either directly or through class membership, the corresponding Monitors feature a border color that matches the center of the nodes.

MonitorColorMatching

Note that the nodes in the above illustration appear with a yellow "ring." This is not an arbitrary application of a color but rather it indicates that the Monitors of those nodes are currently displayed in the Monitor panel (see also Displaying a Monitor). For more details regarding the meaning of the color codes of nodes, please see Node Types and States.

Target Node & State

The Monitor of the Target Node, like the Target Node itself, has a distinct appearance:

  • The background of the Monitor is light green.
  • There is a bullseye icon  next to one of the states. This indicator highlights the selected Target State of the Target Node.
MonitorTargetNodeState

Note that the border of the Monitor can still match any assigned color of the Target Node. #### Filtered States If a node contains a Filtered State, this state is marked with the funnel  icon.

Note that the same indicator  is also tagged onto the corresponding node.
